On Becoming – When It’s Not Working Anymore

We all go through times in life when things don’t seem to be working anymore. Maybe we outgrow our relationships, our job, or the people around us. Maybe we feel the pull to grow more, to push ourselves, to attempt to see things from a different perspective. Whatever it may be, when things stop working on a certain level, it can be unnerving, unsettling and confusing at best. When we start to feel this struggle within, 3 different things can begin to happen. It’s good to notice when a shift is coming on and pay close attention to how we want to respond

Here are 3 common ways we tend to want to respond when we start to feel the pressure of things no longer working for us:

  1. The Turtle – We all know that when a turtle senses danger or anything out of the norm, they close up in their shells to hide from the world. Sometimes, when we humans begin to see that something is amiss or not working in our lives, we can have a tendency to do the same. We are not getting along with our roommate, so we close ourself up in our room. Things are not going well at work, so we close off from our co-workers and hide in a corner to do our work in silence. We are getting bad grades in school, so we escape the issue by playing video games or addictively scrolling social media. Many of us humans do not like conflict. When things appear as though they are no longer working on some level, many of us decide to shut down instead of facing the issues. This can often be the cause of depression and other addictive behaviors.
  2. The Salmon – The salmon is known for it’s determined push upstream to spawn along the beds of small creeks. Their efforts are relentless as they fight against rapids and currents, bears, and other fish just going with the flow. The salmon does not give up. It keeps fighting and pushing. While the salmon have a good reason for their unyielding efforts, humans can have the same tenacity when areas of life begin to deteriorate. Rather than stepping back to see what needs to change or be improved, the mentality can be to just start pushing harder with more effort. The thinking is that maybe MORE will fix the issue. Maybe we try to put more hours in at work or have the endless “talking it out” with our spouse. The problem is that a lot of times, we just put MORE EFFORT toward what was already causing the problem.
  3. The Racoon – The Racoon is known to be a great escape artist. The racoon chooses to solve the issue by just getting the hell out of dodge. A Racoon in human form is someone who runs. They vacate the premises or the situation with the thinking that their absence will resolve things immediately. Or, they simply cannot face the issues themselves. Often, for The Racoon, their problems follow them and they leave those around them to pick up the pieces.

It’s important to notice when things are starting to shift in our lives and stop working like they once did. It’s also important to know how we tend to react and cope in these times. So, which animal do you tend to be when things aren’t working like you would like them to? I’d love to hear.
