ON BECOMING – “Who To Become – Gathering The New Bits and Pieces”

Beginning to gather the new, envisioned bits and pieces, we start to see the cracks that need to be filled in between.

Ever given any thought to who you really want to be in life? Ever given any thought to who HE or SHE would be? Sure, we think, “Oh, I’d like to be a MOM or DAD, a BANKER, a TEACHER, an INTERIOR DECORATOR, A POLICE Man or Woman…”. But these are positions/ titles/ jobs. What I’m talking about is who, really, IS SHE or HE? How does this person speak and act? How do they move and think and behave around others? How do they present themselves in the world and how do they feel on a regular basis? Knowing who SHE or HE IS is essential in BECOMING?.

We are all born with a name, a race, a gender, and certain environments to grow up in and be influenced by. A lot of who we think we are is guided by the familial and societal rules and dictates of these categories. As we grow up, these established ways become embossed and engrained in us so deeply we hardly question them at all. They are familiar. They shape our view of ourselves and the world around us. Even if some behaviors and ways of being may not be in our best interest, we will continue them because they are simply familiar and what we know. Now, I’m not saying all of these customs and behaviors are wrong. I was raised in the south where saying “Y’all” is just a way of life. When I’ve visited other places in the world and used the expression, I’ve gotten some funny looks at times. This certainly doesn’t make “Y’all” a bad thing. Whether “good” or “bad,” to our best interest or not, a lot of what we learn simply goes into our subconscious as children and we end up acting out these “codes of conduct” without ever giving them any thought.

When we make the decision that we want to LEVEL UP and become the better version of ourselves, it means we have to START taking a good look at the bits and pieces of who we actually are right now and what made us become this way. No judgements. No regretting. But, a good, hard look is needed. It means we should start to look at how we react and exchange with others. We should begin to be aware of our own body language and the image and messages we give out. Beginning to question our own thoughts and opinions and asking why we hold certain beliefs is a start to opening a new door. The awareness for where they came is helpful to see a new side of ourselves. To see, “Oh, I still wear my hair in a bob because my Aunt Josie said it’s such a becoming hairdo on me…back in 1984!” Or, “We always have Christmas at Grandma Jones’s house because that’s just what we’ve always done.” Or, “We don’t speak to the Parker Family down the street because they drive Fords and we are Chevy people down here!” You get my point, right?

Looking at our own current ways of being can be a little uncomfortable. It can be very difficult and unsettling to start to question our thoughts, beliefs and ways of behaving for the past 20, 30, 40, 50…. years. But, after taking a look at who we are now, we can start to see where we want to make changes. By looking at these changes, we can start gathering the vision for the new, LEVELED UP version of who we want to be. Beginning to gather the new, envisioned bits and pieces of the FUTURE HIM or HER, we start to see the cracks that need to be filled in between. While we can still keep traits and behaviors about us that we like, the NEXT LEVEL will have a new identity. This new identity will no longer be driven by the rules and regulations of the past. Over time, the bits and pieces of this new version will come together as a WHOLE NEW PERSON! We just have to START!
