When I was little I went through a short phase where I wanted to be Wonder Woman. I would walk around with my hands on my hips and pretend I could levitate to the tops of buildings and capture bad guys with lasers coming out of my fingers. I had a strange, very short-lived habit of staring at the sun; thinking it would provide me extra potent powers for taking down evil forces. It was only when I told my mother it didn’t seem to be working and she scolded me to stop doing that immediately, that I realized my super hero days might be numbered. I might not have been the brightest kid, but that sun surely was! My days of being a super hero were soon to be over and I had to eventually settle on squinting to read the blackboard. I finally had to admit to myself that the only real, not so super power to come from my sun gazing habit was near-sightedness.

When we are kids, we get to dream about being other worldly, extra special, incredibly glamorous and ridiculously powerful. In our minds we get to be “beyond human” and anything seems possible. I’ve never really understood why all that has to go away after ten.

In 2021, something happened and I was thrown back to the old world of my imagination and fantasy once again. Even though I have been an artist my whole life, I realized somewhere along the way I had lost touch with this part of myself. I had become too attached to the daily grind and the drudgery of adulthood. What had happened to throw me back to the envisaging of my childhood? I was introduced to the works of Neville Goddard.

Goddard was a writer, speaker and mystic who lived from 1905 – 1972. Originally from Barbados, he eventually moved to New York City. He was mostly known for his teachings on Universal Law and somewhat controversial interpretations of the Bible.

What I personally loved about his teachings and his writings was that he spoke about how important our imagination is in creating our own lives and how it is actually our imagination that is our greatest super power- whether we are a child or an adult. He spoke about how the things we think about regularly will come to fruition, good or bad. This was a concept I had completely lost touch with after childhood and Goddard made it seem possible to be able to bring back those childlike dreams and visions to create a whole new world.

Here are some important lessons I learned from Neville:

⚡️Our words and thoughts direct our experience.

⚡️Always try to expect the best in every situation.

⚡️Visualize WHO we want to be and imagine what that FEELS LIKE.

⚡️NEVER GIVE UP on this FUTURE BETTER VERSION of who we want to become.

So, I quickly got to work trying to fit back into that proverbial Super Women costume. I began standing taller and prouder with my hands on my hips. I began to start believing again that even with glasses and a slightly larger frame, I could still be that woman I dreamed about so long ago. I didn’t have to have crazy extreme super powers. I didn’t have to do double flips over cars. I just had to start working toward being the best version of the girl that was always there. I slowly began to have a picture in my mind of what SHE looked like. I slowly started to walk in her shoes.

And, who exactly is SHE? She is a work in progress. She is growing and expanding to new heights every day. She’s learning to walk in new, yet somewhat old, but very flashy shoes. She’s always been here. She was just a little beaten down and tarnished. Like Her shoes, the more I polish HER, the more SHE SHINES!

When I see HER in my mind’s eye, she’s shines so brightly. Maybe there was something to all that sun-gazing after all.

WE GOT THIS, Y’ALL!
