On Becoming True North Thursday- Finding Your Purpose

A very wise man and my new friend, Mr. Ted S., recently said to me, “When one finds his TRUE NORTH, he is on the right track.”

I loved this so much! I love the idea that each of us has an internal life compass that is leading us toward our own special destination and giving us the tools we need along the way.

I’ve been wanting to dedicate some time in my On Becoming series to PURPOSE because I think it’s vital to self-confidence and feeling like our life has meaning. So, I will be titling Thursdays “True North Thursday” in his honor and in hopes this will be an encouragement to you.

I have struggled with the idea of “finding purpose” my whole life. Mine was not due to a lack of interests and abilities. My struggle was because I had too many interests and wanted to do it all. I was the one known for chasing shiny objects, wearing too many hats and learning far too many complicated new dance steps.

I don’t regret any of these fun things. In fact, I think a lot of life for many people is gathering what we need and trying many different things so we can actually go out and live with purpose and have something to offer. For many, floundering is just part of the game.

But, at some point though, we have to get serious. We have to decide we’ve done enough floundering and we are ready to be on course. We have to take a good look at our innate talents and gifts; all the information and experiences we’ve taken in to this point and decide how we can package all of this together to move forward and make a mark in this world. I do believe each one of us are here for a reason and a purpose and it’s up to us to put these puzzle pieces together.

So, here are are few things to consider when you start to get serious about following your TRUE NORTH:

  1. It first comes with MAKING A DECISION. You make a decision that you will stick to a specific course of action until it has proven to no longer be a worthy pursuit. Sticking to one trajectory will bring you focus, peace of mind and SUCCESS!
  2. Keep educating and bettering yourself, but don’t get stuck in the self-help and learning vortex. You must be able to move to # 3 as quickly as possible.
  3. To set out toward your TRUE NORTH, you must take CALCULATED ACTION STEPS. You may not know all the steps, but just start taking streps. Next steps will be revealed along the way and you must fully adhere to # 4.
  4. TRUST! Trust that if you are following your heart, your passion and your intuition that GOD, SOURCE, the UNIVERSE- whatever you want to call it, is looking out for you and will provide the path.
  5. DON’T GIVE UP! There will be obstacles for a reason. They are there to test your resolve, to see if you are really serious about making a real difference. Continue on your path to TRUE NORTH. There will be many rewards when you live along the journey of your purpose.
