One day, you just happened to be out on a walk in the woods, when suddenly, you came upon a dirt road you had never seen before. You had the time so you decided to walk a little ways down. You found this path to be pleasant and you continued on for a bit. Eventually, you came to a fork and the road was split into two paths. The road going off to the right was paved and a little bit wider and straighter than the one you had been on. Looking in that direction, the canopy of trees opened and the skies seemed as glorious and bright as the dawn of a new day. You saw flowers and green grass off in the distance.
The road off to the left was much different. It felt darker and more narrow. You could see it was a gnarley mess of limbs and roots and mud. Looking a little closer toward the narrow opening, it seemed musty and heavy. The path was indecipherable with so many roots and stones to grab at your ankles. You could hear moans and other awful noises off in the distance.
As you walked a little closer toward the split, you noticed a tiny package sitting in the road. It was a present; elegantly wrapped in shiny red and gold wrapping.
Without hesitation and as if something had taken control of you, you raced to the present and ripped through the delicate wrapping as quickly as you could.
Inside there was a note on a tiny piece of paper.
It read…
“Here is your gift. The road you choose will be your experience. The gift is in the choice.”
All of life is a gift and all of life is a choice. For much of it, how we choose to look at any given situation becomes a matter of choosing the bright road or the dark one.
