How do I define what I truly want in life at this stage?
A lot of times, once we hit our 40s and 50s, we kinda think life has been decided for us. For a lot of us, we’ve followed the standard path of going to school, getting a job, getting married and creating a family. Once we have accomplished these things, it can make us feel a little lost.
For a lot of us, our 40s and 50s can be a time where all of a sudden we notice we’ve been following the “standard path,” but we haven’t really lived. We start to realize we are not going to be around forever and there are still a lot of things we want to see and do.
But, how do we define what it truly is that we want at this stage? We’ve followed the rules, but there are no real guidelines from here.
Just a few generations ago, the 40s and 50s were a time to start slowing down and start preparing for old age. There were not a whole lot of expectations after raising a family. Women would often hit menopause and they felt like it was all over.
We are not like that anymore. Those of us at this age today know there can be a lot more life to be lived and a lot of us want to be as purposeful about our remaining years as we can be.
Here are a few questions to ask if you start to find yourself questioning your way forward in your 40s and 50s.
🏆What did I do during my first 40/ 50 years that I would like to continue and what would I like to discontinue moving forward?
🏆Which behaviors do I need to stop, change, correct, improve, add moving forward?
🏆What is it I want to see, do, experience, accomplish moving forward?
🏆What talents and gifts can continue to serve me or do I need to develop some new ones?
🏆How do I want to feel moving forward?
🏆How can I be more creative moving forward?
🏆How can I have more fun moving forward?
Take time to get introspective on these questions. Journal, meditate and visualize what you’d like your future to look like.
Our 40s and 50s can just mean it’s the end of an era. Make the decision that the way forward will be your best years yet!
