On Becoming – Standing Tall Tuesday-What happens to our self-esteem and self-image if our posture starts to deteriorate as we age?

A lot of us know that our posture can be one of the things to falter as we age, but do we ever think about what this does to our confidence and self-worth?

Posture is important at any age, but as we get older, posture should be something we should become more concerned about because this alone can play a major role in the way we feel about ourselves, both internally and externally, but also in how old we feel. It also plays a role in our confidence.

*Posture can affect our lung capacity. When we are slouched forward, our lungs have less room for air. Since air equals life, it stands to reason that standing with better posture will give you more vitality. As we age, we want to hold on to enthusiasm and vitality as much as possible.

*Poor Posture can make us feel down. Ever find yourself slouching forward or looking down and when you notice, it makes you feel older and less confident? Psychologically, we associate aging with poorer posture and lessened balance and stability. Shoulders turning forward and a head looking downward are associated with someone who has less enthusiasm and zest for life. We don’t want this as we age.

*Great Posture can make us feel proud and capable. Standing or sitting tall with a proud chest and chin slightly lifted can make us feel more powerful, capable and even invincible. As we age, we want to hold on to these emotions.

Posture is one of those things we can work on at any age and it can go a long way toward helping us feel healthy, happy, confident and vivacious.

Here are some things to try to keep a healthy posture:

💪Try standing with your back against a wall with a tennis ball in hand. Stand as tall as you can and gently pull your shoulders back toward the wall. Place your tennis ball between your chin and your chest. Try to bring the bottom of your skull toward the wall without losing the tennis ball. Go slow with this and don’t force it! This could be something to work on slowly over time.

💪Look in the mirror without shoes and mark with a dry erase marker or piece of tape where the tip of your head falls. Every day, look again and try to stand just a little bit taller than the piece of tape.

💪Do back and shoulder building exercises.

💪Do Core Strength Exercises.

💪Practice this as much as possible: Stand tall and proud with your legs spread slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Make two fists and place them at your hips with your elbows out to the side. Puff out your chest a little bit and look up slightly. The Super Man stance is amazing for immediately boosting your self-confidence and making you feel proud to be YOU!

Just because we age doesn’t mean our posture has to bring us down. Start now to be proactive about standing tall and being proud of yourself.
