I was this girl and I didn’t even know it. And then one day in a Pilates session, my teacher did a hip opening exercise on me and I’m not joking when I say it felt like my entire world had cracked open. All of a sudden I had tears, euphoria, sadness all at once. My teacher had released emotions that I had been carrying in my hip region for decades. It was one of the craziest experiences I had ever had.
Did you know that our hips are a center of stability, movement and also a place where we store emotional tension?
When our bodies feel guarded, our posture is rigid and our movement loses fluidity, it often means our hips are tight and restricted.
But, when our hips are open and moving well, our bodies also feel looser; less restricted. Our movements are bigger and more expansive. Our posture relaxes and we become more confident.
But, it isn’t our hips that have created these ways of moving and being in the world. Often, it’s our thoughts and emotions that have created either tension or expansion and this leads to whether we feel confident or not.
The Deeper Layer:
Many women 40+ are unconsciously holding tension in their hips because they feel they must:
– hold it all together
– brace for what’s to come
– control every situation
– remain tight in order to feel safe
The Confidence Connection:
A woman who feels more positive and open to life can generally move more freely, feels grounded in her hips and pelvis and is not bracing in the way she moves. She feels more stable, more at ease in her body – more self-assured.
Sometimes, just watching what thoughts and emotions you allow and releasing your tight grip on life can help you become more mobile and flexible in your hips and pelvis and can help you feel like the amazing woman you were meant to feel like.
